Fresh off winning MVP, 76ers star Joel Embiid surprisingly returns for Game 2 vs.. Celtics

There was a notion that because the 76ers stole Monday’s Game 1 without him, that they would give Joel Embiid some extra rest to recover from his injury and not rush him back for Game 2, knowing they had some margin for error after already taking home-court advantage from the Celtics. That idea ultimately didn’t hold water. Embiid – who was named the NBA MVP on Tuesday night – returned for Wednesday night’s Game 2. It came as somewhat of a surprise. Embiid, who suffered a sprained LCL in his right knee during Game 3 of the Sixers’ first-round sweep of the Nets, had not even resumed running as of Monday, according to coach Doc Rivers. The center was listed as doubtful on Tuesday. But even with a 1-0 series lead in hand, Embiid was back.“It’s logical thinking,” Rivers said of the idea of giving him some extra rest. “But players, when they’re healthy, they should play. And when they’re not, they shouldn’t play. That would be my answer. So I can guarantee you if Joel’s p...Police capture suspect in deadly shooting at Atlanta medical facility

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who had been shouting at people aboard a New York City subway train died after fellow riders tackled him and one put him in a chokehold that lasted until his body went limp, according to police officials and video of the encounter.Jordan Neely, 30, died from compression of the neck, the city’s medical examiner determined Wednesday.Neely is recognizable to some New Yorkers as a Michael Jackson impersonator who regularly danced in the Times Square transit hub. On Monday afternoon, he was yelling and pacing back and forth on an F train in Manhattan, witnesses and police said, when he was restrained by at least three people, including a U.S. Marine veteran who pulled one arm tightly around his neck.Video of the altercation posted online by a freelance journalist showed the man lying beneath Neely, holding him in a headlock position for several minutes as Neely tried and failed to break free. LOS ANGELES (AP) — For the first time, researchers have captured and radio-collared a bear in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles where mountain lions have been studied for two decades, the National Park Service said Wednesday. The 210-pound (95-kilogram) black bear dubbed BB-12 was caught April 23 in a natural area south of U.S. Route 101 on the western end of the range, the park service said in a statement. It’s the first time in 20 years that scientists have encountered a bear that has taken up residence in the mountains northwest of downtown LA, according to Jeff Sikich, a park service biologist who studies cougars. “He appears to be the only bear here in the Santa Monica Mountains, and he’s likely been here for almost two years based on our remote camera data,” Sikich said. “It will be interesting to see how he shares the landscape with our other resident large carnivores.”BB-12, a male estimated to be about 3 or 4 years old, was measured, given a physical e...Google Canada tells Senate Bill C-18 would create unreasonable financial liability

OTTAWA — Google Canada says it would be reasonable to reconsider sharing links to news sites if Bill C-18, the government’s Online News Act, becomes law.Richard Gingras, the vice-president of the company’s news division, told a Senate committee that Google has shared its concerns with the legislation for over a year. But he says those concerns have not been considered and that recent amendments to the bill have made things worse in some cases. Google takes issue with provisions it says override copyright allowances, by putting a price on links. Gingras says if the company has to pay publishers for linking to their sites, they would lose money with each click. He says that news publishers benefit from those clicks already and that paying for clicks would create an unreasonable financial liability for Google. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 3, 2023.The Canadian PressSuit targets Kentucky ban on gender-affirming care for youth

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Several families on Wednesday challenged Kentucky’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youths, claiming the prohibition interferes with parental rights to seek established medical treatment for their children. They are asking that a judge block a portion of a sweeping measure passed this year by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature. The federal lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Seven Kentucky families with transgender children are listed as plaintiffs. “Under the Constitution, trans youth in Kentucky have the right to medically necessary care,” Corey Shapiro, legal director for the ACLU of Kentucky, said in a statement. “We are filing litigation today to protect against this imminent threat to their well-being and make certain they can thrive by continuing to receive medical care.”Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office said it was re...Ransomware attack affects Dallas police, court websites

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas was hit with a computer ransomware attack Wednesday that brought down its Police Department and City Hall websites and caused some jury trials to be canceled, officials said. The outage didn’t appear to affect 911 calls. However, it did cause problems with a computer-assisted dispatch system that is used to help firefighters respond to emergency calls, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans told the Dallas Morning News.“DFR has been running on manual dispatch operations since early this morning,” Evans said.Ransomware involves hackers essentially holding a target computer or computer system hostage by encrypting its files and demanding payment, often via bitcoin.
