Associated PressRENO, Nev. — Nevada’s dueling contests of presidential nominees have split the field of Republican contenders, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis opting to compete against former President Donald Trump in the caucus run by the state GOP while three major rivals face off instead in the early state-run primary.Though DeSantis’ supporters were among those warning that the Nevada Republican Party had created rules that tilted the process in favor of Trump, the Floridian announced Sunday he would run in the Feb. 8 caucus and try to win delegates that help a candidate become a nominee.Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Monday filed as a candidate for the Feb. 6 primary, run by the state. The primary offers an opportunity to prove electability, at least symbolically, before crucial contests in South Carolina and a slate of primaries on Super Tuesday.Former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott on Friday also filed for the primary.N...Ex-CA prison commissary contractor gets 130 months for mailing drugs, contraband to imprisoned Aryan Brotherhood members

SACRAMENTO — A Los Angeles man who worked at a company that shipped packages to California prisoners has been sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison for using his job to ship drugs, saw blades, cellphones, and other contraband to Aryan Brotherhood members on the inside.Justin Petty, 41, was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller, who also ordered Petty to undergo five years of supervised release after his prison term. Petty pleaded guilty in February to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and heroin.Prosecutors say that in 2016, Petty concealed drugs, lighters, grinding stones, cellphones, screwdrivers, and electronics inside seemingly legitimate commissary packages containing fudge brownies and Oatmeal Creme Pies. Authorities later learned Petty was working with Aryan Brotherhood members in High Desert and Sacramento prisons. The crimes were discovered in part thanks to a wiretap operation aimed at the Aryan Brotherhood’s leadership. By Christine Fernando | Associated PressSUAMICO, Wis. — Kim Pytleski could barely sleep the night before. She replayed the PowerPoint slides in her head, packed her notebook and took a deep breath. The clerk from a rural Wisconsin county north of Green Bay was preparing for a public meeting to explain the election process to residents. She didn’t know who she would encounter. Would some deny the results of the last presidential election? Would the conversation get combative? Most importantly, would she get through to anyone? They were questions Pytleski never expected to ask herself when she started the job in Oconto County more than 14 years ago. But since then, election conspiracy theories have taken root in the rural, heavily Republican county in northeastern Wisconsin. It’s among large swaths of the country where distrust of voting and ballot-counting, fanned by former President Donald Trump’s false claims of a stolen election, maintains a stubborn grasp.Pytleski...Jordan works to shore up support for speaker bid

By Lisa Mascaro | Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — With a push by allies of Donald Trump, far-right firebrand Rep. Jim Jordan appeared Monday to be shoring up support to become U.S. House speaker, winning over reluctant Republicans who have few options left two weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. One by one, Jordan, the hard-charging Judiciary Committee chairman, has been peeling off detractors who view the Ohio Republican as too extreme. A major pressure campaign from Trump allies including Steve Bannon and Fox News’ Sean Hannity has helped quickly build support. Tuesday’s scheduled floor vote could turn into a showdown.“I feel real good about the momentum we have,” Jordan said outside his office in Washington.Ahead of a private GOP meeting Monday evening, Jordan took a cooperative tone vowing to “bring all Republicans together” if he becomes House speaker after the ouster of McCarthy.“The country and our conference cannot afford us ...All lanes reopen on westbound I-80 in San Pablo after to possible shooting

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco’s high-powered offense that seemed unstoppable to begin the season looked awfully pedestrian after losing two key playmakers in a game against Cleveland’s stellar defense. With Deebo Samuel missing most of the game with a shoulder injury and Christian McCaffrey sidelined for most of the second half with an injured oblique and rib, the 49ers struggled to move the ball for most of the second half in a 19-17 loss to the Browns on Sunday.“Any time you lose real good players like that, it’s a challenge,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “But that’s stuff you’ve got to go through. That’s part of football. I just thought we made too many mistakes, missed assignments and stuff that happened.”San Francisco (5-1) had scored at least 30 points in each of the first five games, but didn’t come close to that against the Browns.Five of the Niners’ first six drives after halftime netted no yards and no fir...Latest news
