Analysis: Trump hush money case raises thorny legal issues NEW YORK (AP) — The coverup is worse than the crime, the expression goes. And in the hush money case against former President Donald Trump, prosecutors say the coverup made the crime worse. In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, prosecutors say the 45th president falsified records about three hush money payments in order to keep potentially damaging stories from coming to light as he campaigned for the presidency. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said it was his effort to cover up crimes related to the 2016 election that allowed prosecutors to elevate the charges to felonies. The indictment, however, raises many thorny issues about state and federal law that could provide openings for the defense to attack the charges to try to get them tossed before the case even gets to trial. “The bottom line is that it’s murky,” said Richard Hasen, an expert in election law and professor at the University of California, Los Angeles law school. “And the district attorney did not offer a d...

Volkswagen recalls 140,000 SUVs due to faulty passenger-side airbags, owners told not to let anyone ride shotgun

Volkswagen recalls 140,000 SUVs due to faulty passenger-side airbags, owners told not to let anyone ride shotgun Volkswagen is recalling 143,000 of its big Atlas SUVs in the US because a faulty sensor on the front passenger side can switch the airbag system off under certain conditions. Until the issue can be corrected, VW is advising owners to avoid letting people ride in that seat. The problem is “sporadic,” according to documents VW filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls. Most modern passenger vehicles have weight sensors in the front seat to detect if someone small — like a child — is riding in that seat. Airbags, which inflate forcefully in the event of a crash, can injure small children. If these sensors detect a small person is seated there, the airbag is switched off.But faulty sensors in some Atlas SUVs can cause the so-called “passenger occupant detection system” to indicate a system issue and deactivate the airbag. This could leave front seat passengers without the protection of the airbag in th...

Bright and Breezy Midweek The beautiful stretch of weather continues this Wednesday across South Florida. Following rather hot temperatures earlier in the week, highs the rest of this week will be closer to average at about 2-4F above normal at most locations.Expect lots of sunshine this Wednesday paired with highs in the mid 80s along with a better breeze out of the east, sustained up to 20 mph. UK’s infected blood inquiry calls for extension of compensation LONDON — More people affected by the U.K’s infected blood scandal should be entitled to compensation, its public inquiry has recommended.Dubbed the “worst treatment disaster in the NHS,” it has been estimated that thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis from contaminated blood they received from the NHS between 1970 and 1991.Former Prime Minister Theresa May set up a public inquiry into the scandal in 2017, describing it as “an appalling tragedy which should simply never have happened.” In July, the inquiry’s chair Brian Langstaff, while continuing to hear evidence, recommended that victims should receive interim compensation of £100,000 until full settlements are agreed when the inquiry publishes its full report. The government made the first compensation payments in October, to around 4,000 surviving victims and widows. But campaigners said these awards did not go far enough, as they excluded the parents and children of victims....
